Easter Morning!

by John Donne

SLEEP, sleep, old sun, thou canst not have repass’d,
As yet, the wound thou took’st on Friday last ;
Sleep then, and rest ; the world may bear thy stay ;
A better sun rose before thee to-day ;
Who—not content to enlighten all that dwell
On the earth’s face, as thou—enlighten’d hell,
And made the dark fires languish in that vale,
As at thy presence here our fires grow pale ;
Whose body, having walk’d on earth, and now
Hasting to heaven, would—that He might allow
Himself unto all stations, and fill all—
For these three days become a mineral.
He was all gold when He lay down, but rose
All tincture, and doth not alone dispose
Leaden and iron wills to good, but is
Of power to make e’en sinful flesh like his.
Had one of those, whose credulous piety
Thought that a soul one might discern and see
Go from a body, at this sepulchre been,
And, issuing from the sheet, this body seen,
He would have justly thought this body a soul,
If not of any man, yet of the whole.

So, way back when, I had a little feature on my blog called “Wow-ful Women Wednesday” where I’d post a video of some singer that made me say “wow”. Sometimes “Wow, that’s amazing.” Sometimes “Wow, how did she get a recording contract? And sometimes “Wow, why was that ever considered a good thing in my [...]

A New Vocabulary — The ‘Bilingual’ Edition

March 20, 2014

Setting:  I’m looking at the 2 amazing loaves of French Bread my daughter made this morning, and marveling, wondering where on earth she got her skillz (yup. I just did that. Spelled it with a z. I’m cool like that.) Me (speaking, again, as if I’m cooler and younger than I am): Wow. This bread [...]

Not the Teacher I Meant To Be

February 8, 2014

It has been a while since I’ve had something new written to send to Heart of the Matter, but they posted this article of mine today. Whether or not you homeschool, I’m sure you can relate to some part of your life not being how you imagined it when you were young and idealistic! Here’s [...]

Watch Your Words

January 20, 2014

This morning in my Bible reading, I came face-to-face with Psalm 18 where David says that the Lord has given him the shield of his salvation, the Lord’s right hand supported him, and the Lord’s gentleness made him great. I am always struck by that thought: gentleness bringing about greatness. I remembered that I’d written [...]

Still standing

January 17, 2014

Our pastor freed my heart with a simple statement in a sermon some months ago.  We were studying Ephesians 6, particularly how to be Strong in the Lord.  Many times in that passage there is a call to “stand”.  Stand firm. Stand against the schemes of the devil. Stand to the end. Stand. Stand. Stand. [...]

Packer on the Church

January 11, 2014

My dear father gave me a great devotional book for Christmas. It is collected writings of J.I.Packer broken down into daily readings. I’m enjoying it very much….this morning’s entry in particular.  It is a good thing to read through and pray about on a Saturday that will be (could be?) followed by a visit to [...]

Foodie Fridays

January 10, 2014

Sometimes all a girl wants is breakfast for supper. Or maybe she wants a savoury breakfast. Or a brunchy-lunch. Either way, this dish is the berries. Except, not literally. No berries were harmed in the making of this dish. What you want is a frittata. A frittata is basically a big, not-flipped omelet that you [...]

My High Efficiency Washing Machine

January 9, 2014

As you may recall, we do a lot of laundry around here. Last time I counted (7 years ago) we were doing 20 loads a week, not including bed sheets.  As everyone’s jeans get longer, and as more towels are being used more often, I’m sure we are doing more loads than 20 each week. [...]

New Year

January 1, 2014

Length of days does not profit me except the days are passed in thy presence, in thy service, to thy glory. Give me a grace that precedes, follow, guides, sustains, sanctifies, aids every hour, that I may not be one moment apart from thee, but may rely on thy Spirit to supply every thought, speak [...]
